What Is Censorship?

In legal terms, censorship is governmental suppression of speech.

In the broader sense, censorship refers to the suppression of content by an institution or individual.

Censorship can also be self-imposed in response to political pressure or fear. Self-censorship can lead to a chilling effect whereby people disallow certain types of speech for fear of how others will react.
What Is Censorship?
“The First Amendment was designed to protect offensive speech, because nobody ever tried to ban the other kind.”

- Mike Godwin, Staff Counsel, Electronic Freedom Foundation
